My husband Paul loves to Mountain bike so I wanted to dedicate a section of this website to people that like to mountain bike. As you probably already know, mountain biking is a great form of exercise. It's one of the few exercises that works all the muscles in your body. For those of you new to mountain biking or aren't familiar with the sport, here is as short explain of how it works all the muscles in your body... You work the muscles of you lower body while pedaling. You work your upper body as well when you climb hills. (One good trick is while remaining seated, to rotate your wrists parallel to the incline and pull back and down while climbing a steep incline. This will help you to keep traction on your back wheel and while doing this you also work your upper body.) Mountain biking will also give you a great cardio vascular workout. On an intermediate to advanced course it will probably find your heart rate reaching 75% to 90% of your maximum heart rate. To find out what your maximum heart rate is just subtract your age from 220. ex. 220 - 31 = 189
My husband uses a Polar A5 heart rate monitor when he rides. The Polar A5 will measure heart rate as well as calories burned. My husband can burn up to 1000 calories per hour while in the woods. For more information on the Polar A5 heart rate monitor click here. Here are some great Mountain Bike links that I have found: www.trianglemtb.com - Great website dedicated to mountain biking in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina. www.thespincycle.com - A great local bike shop for buying a bike, get fitted for one, or if you need some work done. MTB Review - Great website loaded with lots of great information about trails all over the US.
